Stelline d'Oro

2 Cups unbleached flour
1/2 tsp salt
1/2 tsp baking powder
1/2 cup butter
1 cup sugar
1 egg
1-1/2 tbsps orange juice or 1/2 tsp of pure orange extract
1/8 tsp saffron
1-1/2 tbsps warm water
1-1/2 tbsps orange juice
1 cup confectioners' sugar, sifted

Sift the flour, baking powder, and salt together.

Cream the butter with the sugar. Add the egg, the orange juice and mix. Add the dry ingredients and mix well. Wrap the dough in wax paper and chill (approx. 1-hour).

Cut the dough into 4-pieces. Roll each piece, one at a time, until 1/8-inch thick. Cut with a star shaped cookie cutter. Place on a greased cookie sheet and bake at 375-degrees for about 6- or 7-minutes.

Remove and cool.

Glaze: Soak saffron for about about 10-minutes in warm water. Remove saffron and retain the liquid. Mix all remaining glaze ingredients together with saffron liquid. Glaze the cookies and sprinkle with coarse raw sugar.

Notes: orange flower water can be substituted for the oj. I've never tried it, but I hear that it is the traditional method.
